Face It: Kobe Failed

We've been getting all these angry comments and insults from very frustrated people regarding the Lakers' loss in Game 7, Kobe's role in it and Kobe's career in general. So I just thought I'd clear up a few things.

These are claims that people have made and our responses to them.

Claim: We're hypocrates because we tell Kobe to stop shooting, and when he stops shooting we criticize him and call him selsish.

Response: We don't want Kobe to stop shooting. We want Kobe to shoot intelligently (i.e. not when he's double- or triple-teamed, work with his teammates to create plays, and pass the ball to his teammates when they're open. I personally didn't criticize him for taking 35 shots in Game 6 because he actually made 20 of them. That said, someone taking that many shots can break up the rhythm of the team, leaving the other players cold, which takes away the effectiveness of the team's game. But, I could live with that. The day Kobe starts shooting an average of 60% from the floor is the day I will be OK with him taking 35 shots a game.

As to what Kobe did in the second half of the game, it is the epitome of selfish. I don't know why he only took 3 shots in the second half. No one will ever know, even if Kobe were to actually give us a straight explanation. Even those who idolize him have to admit that he always says "the right thing," as opposed to the truth. So lets look at the possible explanations for that behavior:

Explanation 1: Kobe wanted to play team ball

Do you really buy that? Had he taken 8-12 shots, I could have bought that explanation. But 3 shots, especially when his team was down 15 points at the half? Come on.

Also, lets say, for argument's sake, he was trying to play team ball. Playing team ball does not just mean not taking a shot everytime the ball is in your hands. It means (especially for a guy like Kobe who claims to be the leader) that you set up picks for your teammates, that you create plays, that you pass the ball to the open guy, and that you play great defense. Did Kobe do any of that? No. He had 1 assist the whole game. I didn't see him create a single play. And, he didn't play good defense, something he had actually improved on throughout the series.

Therefore, that explanation goes out the window.

Explanation 2: Kobe was hurt

Kobe didn't look hurt, he never said he was, and neither did Phil Jackson. So, that explanation goes out the window as well.

Explanation 3: Kobe was trying to prove some sort of point

Whether Kobe was responding to that LA Times article or not, we don't know. However, his behavior is stunningly similar to what he did last time against the Kings. So, a logical conclusion is that he stopped shooting either as a response to some criticism - whether it was the LA Times article, Phil Jackson, or anyone else. That is the explanation that makes the most sense. If you don't agree, write me and tell me what makes sense to you. If this explanation is true, you can't deny that those actions were very selfish. Maybe Kobe shooting more wouldn't have saved the game, or maybe it would have. We'll never know. But his lack of any sort of effort in that second half - on shooting, assists or defense - is nothing but his feeding his own ego.

Claim: Without Kobe, the Lakers would be at the bottom of the barrel.

Response: True, the rest of the team is nothing impressive. Other than Lamar Odom, the rest of the players are, at best, average. However, whose fault is this? It was Kobe that demanded that Shaq be traded, that Phil Jackson leave (and now all of a sudden he says he is chummy with Phil, why the sudden change of heart?), that Gary Payton was too old. Kobe wanted to be THE star, THE leader, THE Laker. So now he is. And now he's complaining that his team is young and inexperienced. He made his own bed and he has to lie in it.

Claim: Shaq hasn't gotten anywhere without Kobe either. Shaq is a nobody because the Heat didn't win a championship last year.

Response: Shaq's Heat made it to the Eastern Conference finals last year and lost to Detroit in 7 games. I think that's a noteworthy accomplishment. Without Shaq, the Heat's was unimpressive in the first half of this season. And, without Shaq, the Lakers didn't make it to the playoffs last year. I think that's proof enough. Also, don't forget: Shaq is 34, Kobe is 27. Shaq is past his prime, Kobe is in his prime.

No one claims that Shaq can win championships by himself. If a star could win a championship completely by himself, teams wouldn't bother paying all these other guys millions of dollars, they would just find 1 star and get some chumps off the street to fill space. However, Shaq is someone who makes a big difference. There are lots of good guards out there - more than 20 than average 20+ a game on a decent percentage. There are very very few good centers though. And no one as dominant as Shaq. No other player in the league commands a double team all the time. And, like I said, this is Shaq at 34, not 27.

Finally, Shaq knows his place. He doesn't go around saying that he can win championships by himself. He is not delusional. He knows he needs a good guard to help him. Unlike Kobe, his arrogance doesn't cloud his judgment.

By the way, this is a blog about hating Kobe, not about loving Shaq. We're not Shaq idolizers here. Shaq has his flaws, just like everyone else. However, it's a fact that when Shaq was there, the Lakers won championships or at least made it to the conference finals. Once he left, they didn't make the playoffs. Period.

Claim: Kobe is loyal to the Lakers.

Response: How quickly we forget. In 2004, Kobe threatened to go to the Clippers unless he got more money from the Lakers and Jerry Buss got rid of Shaq and Phil. The Clippers actually believed this and traded a bunch of players to clear cap space for him. Then, once the Lakers sweetened the deal, he resigned with them, leaving the Clippers in the dust. What a loyal guy.

Claim: The Lakers would choke if they had LeBron, or anyone else other than Kobe.

Response: Maybe, maybe not. The thing is that LeBron doesn't claim that he doesn't need anyone else to win championships. He always emphasizes the need for his teammates. And, at 21, LeBron has already done amazing things for the Cavs. And, LeBron doesn't have someone like Shaq at his side.

-----------

Kobe Lovers, we know you're angry and frustrated. I would be too if I were you. Kobe blew the chance of a lifetime - to prove everyone (including us) wrong. But it's OK, there's always next year, right?

you said yourself you don't watch every game, that's why you don't see the greatness. we true fans watch every game and we see the amazing things kobe does on the court, that's why we defend him so much. to me, it's an honor to watch him play, it will be a long time before we see anyone like him again. I'm just enjoying the process. no one has as much heart, drive, intensity as him. he has triumphed above horrible adversities.

It's not that hard to probe that Kobe sucks. His accomplishments? what accomplishments are you talking about? Dobe getting 81 points? or scoring 62 points? those are individual accomplishments, how many team accomplishments do the Lakers have once Dobe managed to chase all the good players out of LA so he could be "The Man".

oh yeah, NOT making the playoffs last year, choking this year, and quitting on your teammates to make a point!!.

Have the Lakers sunk so low that you consider it an accomplisment getting eliminated on the 1st round after being up 3 to 1? WOW, how low have the Lakers sunk? Go learn something about good basketball, and keep worshipping Dobe.

How many Dobe's do the Spurs, or Pistons have? none, oh WOW, and yet they win, why? b/c they play as a team.

Who called Dobe "uncoachable"? Phil Jackson, and why? b/c Dobe likes playing 1 on 5 which is why they lose.

No go cry, or switch teams. I've gotten so many emails from Lakers fans telling me that Dobe is driving the Lakers into the ground, and that's a fact.

One more thing, look at that Nike commercial where Dobe says that it's him against the world, why does he say that? b/c alot of people hate his ass. The only people that like Dobe is Laker fans that don't focus on what's good for the team.

As I've said before, the new motto of Dobe fans should be "There is always next year" and with that, I retire from responding to folks that know anything about b-ball, and who are more concerned with watching individual performances, as opposed to championship TEAMS, something Dobe will never achieve, the rings with Shaq don't count.

And get used to being on the sidelines during the final rounds of the playoffs

nah. its kinda hard. considering the fact that we have a championship at lest every decade. considering the fact that its the lakers. LOs angeles lakers. Kobe fans love kobe because they're laker fans. r u stupid. they dont like kobe for kobe. they want the lakers to win. and obviously he has proven that he could win without shaq. he didnt make the playoffs last year but they had lyk a 10 game turnaround.

As I've said before, the new motto of Dobe fans should be "There is always next year" and with that, I retire from responding to folks that know anything about b-ball, and who are more concerned with watching individual performances, as opposed to championship TEAMS, something Dobe will never achieve, the rings with Shaq don't count.

and and im pretty sure shaq will retire without a ring. (the ones with "Dobe" doesnt count.)

Have the Lakers sunk so low that you consider it an accomplisment getting eliminated on the 1st round after being up 3 to 1? WOW, how low have the Lakers sunk? Go learn something about good basketball, and keep worshipping Dobe.

HELLO. actually taking a 3-1 lead against the suns arent that low. yea they blew it, but its not kobes fault. he did good. EVEN U said that in game 6. so hate all u want. they are good as a team u stupid. going 11-3 in the final regular season games. also, that was without shaq. without wade, shaq is nothin. its cause he has superstars with him that gets his team in to the conference finals every year.

WOW, how low have the Lakers sunk? Go learn something about good basketball

good basketball? i tell u proving all the critics wrong and makin teamates better. every laker has been doing the best in recent years so shut up. they will only get better and better, lyk they always do.

O and by the way, whos ur team? I bet u bandwagon and choose the pistons or the spurs. I bet ur team is a loser in past decades. so u tell me which TEam sunk more.

the lakers, with the highest road attendence in history, 9 retired jerseys. and 14 championship rings. so nothin to be worried about. Losing is something that happens to every team.

now whats ur team. o i bet u scared to tell cause u know there ganna get owned every year. so shut up when it comes to the lakers. at least they know how to win.

The Dobe lovers remind me of snot-nosed little kids, sitting on the floor in their poopy diapers, crying and not knowing what to do because mama (in this case, Father Dobe) isn't around to change the diapers and talk baby talk to them.

Bottom line...you lost and you just can't cope with it!

Worshippers of the Dobe religion...bow to your fallen master!

Thanks for that link. Note that some of those people criticizing Kobe's performance in Game 7 are die hard Laker fans.

Btw, I do watch 99% of the Laker games. There was a month this year where I was working insane hours so I missed a couple of games and only got to see parts of others. But believe me, I've been watching Kobe play for years and take crazy shot after crazy shot. Of course Kobe has good games and of course Kobe makes good shots in some games.

No one here is saying Kobe has no talent.

No one is saying Kobe has no athleticism.

He does, otherwise there would be no point in talking about him at all.

Otherwise, we'd have a blog about Luke Walton and how much he sucks.

However, what keeps him from greatness (which I don't dispute he could achieve given his talent) is his attitute, his arrogance and his undying love and concern for himself and no one else. All that clouds his judgment and keeps him from realizing that he could be so much better if he stopped being so selfish. Even when he is being "selfless," i.e. passing the ball, this is all done to prove to the world that he is selfless, as opposed to his realizing that being selfless is the way to win basketball games.

I personally don't like the Spurs nor the Pistons. I am not a bandwaggon rider who will like a team because they win. However, I give credit where credit is due. The Spurs play like a team. The Pistons are the most unselfish team in the NBA. That is why they win. No one can dispute it. The team concept works. That is why you have 5 people playing basketball, not one and not two.

You claim that you don't like the Lakers for Kobe, that you just like him because he is part of the Lakers. But liking and rooting for your team doesn't mean being blind and not seeing that one of the players or the team is doing something wrong. When the Lakers go from winning championships and being in the finals to not making the playoffs because Kobe wanted to get rid of competition, I think you need to open your eyes and see if there's something wrong with that picture.

Sure, they're All Stars, but how did they make to the All Star game?

By playing team ball.

None of these players is good enough to individually carry his team to a championship. Take Tony Parker or Rip Hamilton, trade them to the Bobcats and see if they make the All Star game next year.

But, these guys are unselfish, play together and listen to their coaches. They create plays that leave other teams in the dust. That's what gets them to the All Star game, not their individual stats.

As JD has correctly pointed-out, the Dobe fans have shown a level of education that shows why they're Dobe Fans.

Teamplayer, I couldn't have put it better myself.

The day Dobe wins 1 ring is the day Dobe-Brownosers can talk, and even then, Dobe would be 5 rings shorts of Jordan's b/c the ones Dobe got with Shaq don't count.

The reality is that no matter how many "posts" Dobe fans write here, it will not erase the fact that Dobe is 0 for 2 w/o Shaq.

The funny thing is that Lebron at 21 has accomplished more than Dobe has w/o Shaq. Lebron is in the 2nd round, with a cast of players that are average at best, and Dobe is at home. Oh, and Lebron is 21, Dobe is about to turn 28. Who's future looks brighter?

The Pistons, the Spurs, the Nets, etc etc, all do NOT have a Dobe, yet they're all pretty good teams. They don't have a "scoring champion", but they have a team concept. Something that Dobe just doesn't get. Jordan began winning championships when he started sharing the rock, and he did with players like Bill Winnington, Luke Longley, imagine that? the only true good player he had was Pippen (which honestly, is what Dobe was, at best, to Shaq)

Even the L.A. Times is busting on Dobe's little dissapearing act from game 7, and so is the rest of the press and the country.

We can go on in circles here, but Dobe fans are too dumb to admit that they're wrong, eventhough the facts speak for themselves.

Have fun this summer, keep worshipping Dobe and his INDIVIDUAL accomplishments, and remember the Dobe motto "There's always next year."

haters sae kobe's rings with shaq doesnt count, u guys call the shots huh??

U guys sae shaq carry kobe, oh pls doesnt kobe carry shaq too? What was shaq without kobe? Nth! Shaq's 3 rings came wif kobe.

Even wif wade, look at how bad the miami heat is, at least the future for lakers looks bright.

N oh pls if u guys sae the reason miami heat is not playin well is becos shaq is old, u r contradicting urselg. If shaq is old den it makes every sense for lakers to trade him, if shaq aint old and heat stil perform so badly tt means it has always been kobe who had been carrying shaq, ok?

Haters keep harpin tt kobe demanded shaq to be traded. Oh cum on did he ever sae tt directly, u hear it? Or u get the info from the media? Jus becos everyone saes so? Plsss little kids, Mitch is the gm, Jerry Buss is the owner, they have the final decision ok?

N oh yeah so wat kobe forced shaq out? U think shaq nv wanted kobe out? Its jus tt shaq aint as powerful as kobe and lost in the end. If today, it was shaq staying in la and kobe got traded, will u guys bash shaq?? No! Cos u simply hate kobe(and u stil wan to give lots of fake excuses to back ur arguments).

Its reali sad tt there are stil such pathetic losers in the world like asorto1 and other bloggers here.

Anon, do you honestly think that these guys started this blog with the idea that they were going to be loved by everyone because of what they write? Telling us "Keep on KobeHating and people will keep hating on you." is kind of redundant, isn't it?

What makes you think any of us CARE whether we are hated!? I find it all really amusing. The authors of this blog write the cold hard truth and the truth hurts, doesn't it. Dobe failed, the Lakers lost and there is nothing you can do about it but whine and point fingers at everyone else.

look teamplayer. i know what kobe did was wrong. it was an ignorant decision. But what ur doing here is not right. even jordan cant be perfect. the media never put him as a bad guy.
lets look at one thing that u missed. this is the real decision, made by a true leader. look at it this way teamplayer, even u cant disagree with this. the reason why kobe gave up in the second half, was that it DIDNT WORK IN THE 1st. he shot 13 in the first half. he scored 24. that obviously wasnt working. he had to change it because he was the only one that was playing offense in the first half. why cant u understand, kobe didnt throw the game away. he never does that. look, even jordan couldnt win without a player to go to. lakers have nothin but one decent player. even u say so. he said he wants to win. the lakers couldnt play lyk they did in games 1-3. thats y he tried to make them in the second half. u cant call him a quitter to make things rite. doing what he did in the first half was a waste
